1991 Oakland, CA - a single mother and her two sons were left homeless from an accidental fire.

Years of poverty and homelessness led to the eventual placement of those two sons into foster care.

World Champion NBA Player, Leon Powe was one of those boys. Leon overcame adversity with a strong work ethic, persistence and the guidance of his mentor, Bernard Ward. Leon attributes much of his current success in life to the mentorship of Bernard.

Leon's firsthand knowledge of the foster care system and his experience of a powerful mentorship inspired Leon to found Fresh Start Family Services.

Leon's vision is to provide individuals in foster care the opportunity to achieve their goals through the power of mentoring and learning independent living skills.
